It can be disheartening for long-time established companies to know that the world’s largest companies are incumbents that started life no time ago as start-ups – some in garages. And perhaps worse still to learn that a high percentage all employees now say they want to quit their jobs and start their own companies.

The answer has to be to go with the grain, embrace the zeitgeist. In this entrepreneurial era companies should look to work with entrepreneurs and start-ups and importantly to create open innovative corporate cultures in which in-house intrapreneurship can flourish.

Successful entrepreneurship can be about many things from developing an idea you are passionate about within an organization, to starting a small business, to founding a VC-backed challenger to the tech giants.

The key to success is to be self-aware about your own strengths, to be sure you have the necessary aptitude and skill. You must then fully understand the nature of the risk you are able to take on and strength-test your business idea with market research and detailed planning. You must then build a business case to convince financial backers or internal company champions who share your goals. Finally, going it alone rarely works and finding the right mentors who understand you is critical.

This instructive white paper from HEC Paris professors Thomas Åstebro, Frédéric Iselin, Sihem Jouini, Etienne Krieger, Gérard de Maupeou, Michel Safars and others, provides realistic insights into what is needed to become a successful entrepreneur or intrapreneur.
